Tattoo artist Amy Black had found a way to help women with breast cancer.
In 2011, Black began offering specialty tattoos to patients who had undergone mastectomies. She worked with patients to tattoo realistic areolae and nipples, or created beautiful designs to cover up or complement their surgical scars.
During her work with post-mastectomy patients, Black encountered many people who were concerned that their health insurance would not cover the costs of a tattoo. In response, she founded the Pink Ink Fund, a nonprofit that offers financial support, information and education to patients seeking a post-mastectomy tattoo.
On the fund’s Instagram page, Black shared images of nipple and cover-up tattoos she’d done, re-grammed cancer survivors’ post-mastectomy pictures, and shared information about the tattooing process.
But some other people on Instagram didn’t like it.
