Viola Davis Gave A Harrowing Speech About Sexual Assault
Nov 19th 2015, 19:40, by Nina Bahadur

In a powerful speech on November 17, Viola Davis spoke out about how sexual assault changed her sister’s life.

At a benefit for Stuart House, a program that helps sexually abused children and their families, Davis shared that her sister was assaulted when she was eight years old.

“From there, a precocious, very intelligent, very creative child grew up to be frail, angry, a drug addict by the time she was 20,” Davis said.

Her sister went on to have six children, all of whom were removed by social services. She became a prostitute and an IV drug user. She told the audience that she was sharing her sister’s haunting story because "memories demand attention because memories have teeth.”

According to Davis, programs like Stuart House will provide valuable resources and support to sexual assault survivors like her sister. She hopes that Stuart House will be able to help victims in a way she could not help her sister.

“I wish I could tell my sister that she’s not dirty, and that she should not feel any shame for something that she literally was not responsible for,” Davis said in closing. “I wish I could save her life.”
